Lukashenko Calls for Avoiding Gorbachov's Mistakes in Belarus

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has stated that a generational change is occurring in the country, emphasizing that the mistakes of the second half of the 1980s cannot be repeated.

“Whether we want it or not, there is a generational change. And this is always a very dangerous period. It must be passed very carefully and delicately... and we must not make mistakes here,” Lukashenko's words were quoted by the press service on Friday.

The President reminded that the political life in the country is undergoing reforms, notably, the All-Belarusian People's Assembly has become a constitutional body with serious powers. “This is serious. This is a limitation for the authorities and oversight from above. And people must be represented there accordingly,” he noted.

“We would not repeat the Gorbachov era, when we watched cartoons and rejoiced—oh, happiness will come. The country was ruined and fell into a pit. We cannot repeat this. Therefore, this body is very important for us; it must be integrated into our life. This body must be a guardian during the transition period, during the generational change, and must see what is happening. Therefore, both the military doctrine and the national security concept regarding war and peace issues must be addressed there,” Lukashenko emphasized.

During the transitional period, he stated, special attention should be paid to the economy. “During this generational change, we must not lose quality,” said the President.
