Israel and Hamas Reach Agreement

The Israeli authorities and leaders of the Hamas terrorist group have reached a preliminary agreement on a "humanitarian pause" through intensive negotiations mediated by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt. In the latest round of shuttle diplomacy that began on December 28, the mediators were able to smooth over disagreements regarding the duration of a preliminary ceasefire and reduce Hamas’s proposed months-long pause to 30 days, sources familiar with the negotiations have told Reuters.

So far, the parties have reached a preliminary agreement that during the 30-day period of peace on the Gaza front, Israeli hostages taken by Hamas militants will be able to be exchanged for Palestinian prisoners. However, the implementation of the framework plan has been delayed by mutual agreement between the two sides due to disagreements over the complete cessation of military operations.

Qatar, Egypt, and the United States are seeking to adopt a phased approach regarding the release of various categories of Israeli hostages, from civilians to military personnel. In return, Israel is expected to halt military operations, release detained Palestinians, and provide humanitarian aid to Gaza. Israel is expected to exhibit the same approach.

Hamas is seeking to finalize a "package deal," with the primary demand remaining a permanent ceasefire until the final release of the hostages. The militants are concerned that after the release of civilian hostages, the Israeli Defense Forces will resume military operations in the region, despite the remaining Israeli soldiers in captivity.
