Nearly Three Times More People Killed in Gaza Conflict Than in the Last 15 Years: UN

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip has resulted in nearly three times more deaths than in the last 15 years combined, according to a report from the United Nations entity focusing on gender equality issues, UN Women.

The statistics reveal that approximately 25,000 Palestinians have been killed since the latest war began following Hamas's attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023.

Specifically, the report analyzes the impact of the war on women. According to the data:

  • 70% of those killed in Gaza since October 7 are women or children.
  • Every hour, two mothers are killed in Gaza.
  • Only two women's shelters in Gaza, both located in Gaza City, are currently closed.
  • Women lack access to adequate water and sanitation facilities, including menstrual hygiene, which affects their mental and physical health.
  • Disruptions in communications and electricity severely limit the ability to provide remote support services for combating gender-based violence.
  • 1.9 million people (or 85% of Gaza's total population) have been displaced, including an estimated 1 million women and girls, according to UN Women.

Earlier, the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) reported that nearly 20,000 births have occurred in Gaza during the current conflict, with many mothers suffering or dying due to a lack of resources, while newborns are subjected to dire conditions.
