If Trump is Elected President, It Will Not Be Easy for Canada: Trudeau
If Republican candidate Donald Trump wins the upcoming U.S. presidential elections in November, it will be a "setback" that complicates life for Canada, stated Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Left-leaning centrist Trudeau, who came to power in November 2015, had difficult relations with Trump during his presidency. In 2018, Trump accused Trudeau of being weak and dishonest.
"The first time (Trump's presidency) wasn't easy, and if there is a second time, it won't be easy either," Trudeau said during a discussion organized by the Montreal Chamber of Commerce.
Canada sends 75% of its exports of goods and services to the United States and is particularly vulnerable to any turn towards protectionism in the U.S.
When Trump assumed power, he promised to renegotiate the free trade agreement that linked the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Ottawa spent nearly two years in negotiations to create a trilateral agreement that primarily safeguarded Canada's interests.
