French Senate Calls for Sanctions Against Azerbaijan

Earlier today, the Senate of the French Republic adopted a resolution supporting Armenia and demanding sanctions against Azerbaijan with a vote of 336 in favor and 1 against. This information was shared on the official Facebook page of the Armenian Embassy in France.

Among other provisions, the French Senate resolution:

• Supports the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Armenia,
• Condemns the military assault carried out by Azerbaijan, with support from its allies, on September 19 and 20, 2023, in Artsakh,
• Calls on Azerbaijan to guarantee the right of return for the Armenian population to Artsakh, ensuring conditions that secure their safety and well-being,
• Demands the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of Azerbaijani troops and their allies from the sovereign territory of Armenia,
• Notes that Armenia has the right to defend its territorial integrity and to take measures, including military ones, to ensure its security,
• Condemns the arbitrary arrests of political leaders in Artsakh,
• Calls for Azerbaijan's removal from the intergovernmental committee for the protection of cultural heritage in the case of armed confrontation,
• Highlights the establishment and deployment of an international expert group within UNESCO to prepare an informational report on the state of cultural and religious heritage in Artsakh,
• Emphasizes the necessity of taking strict measures, including the seizure of assets belonging to Azerbaijani leaders and imposing an embargo on the import of gas and oil from Azerbaijan as sanctions against military aggression carried out by Azerbaijan.

The resolution was co-authored by the leaders of all political factions in the Senate. Earlier, it was reported that a resolution regarding the territorial integrity of the Republic of Armenia was included in the agenda of the French Senate, condemning Azerbaijan's military assault in Artsakh and calling for the prevention of further attempts to violate the territorial integrity of the Republic of Armenia, including sanctions against Azerbaijan and ensuring the right of return for the Armenian population in Artsakh.
