UN Secretary-General Concerned About Situation on Israel-Lebanon Border

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed concern over the potential escalation of the situation along the Israel-Lebanon border, warning that the Israel-Lebanon conflict could threaten peace and stability across the entire Middle East region.

“The exchanges of strikes between Israel and Lebanon could provoke a broader escalation in the situation between the two and seriously affect regional stability,” Guterres stated in a declaration published on the UN website.

“It is my duty to convey this clear and straightforward message to all parties: stop playing with fire along the ‘blue line,’ reduce tensions, and cease military operations,” he added.

“We cannot allow what we see happening in Gaza to occur in Lebanon, and we cannot permit the situation in Gaza to continue,” Guterres emphasized.

The UN Secretary-General also called for an “immediate humanitarian ceasefire” in the Gaza Strip to allow aid to reach the enclave and “facilitate the release of hostages.”

The Hamas movement attacked Israel on October 7, 2023. In response, Israel launched military operations in the Gaza Strip. The Lebanese Hezbollah movement has been periodically attacking Israeli territory in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. However, Hezbollah has avoided engaging in large-scale military actions. Israel, for its part, responds to the group's attacks but has so far refrained from intensive combat, focusing its attention not on the border with Lebanon but rather on the battles in Gaza.
