Israel Plans to Take Control of Gaza-Egypt Border: WSJ

Israel is planning to conduct an operation to take control of the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing sources.

Unnamed officials from both Israel and Egypt informed the newspaper that Israeli authorities have already notified Cairo of their intentions to launch a military operation along the border with Egypt. Potential issues mentioned by WSJ sources include the deployment of Israeli forces from the southeastern region of Gaza, extending to the Mediterranean Sea.

It is noted that for nearly two decades, Israel controlled all borders of the Gaza Strip except for one. Now, the Jewish state is attempting to regain control over the southern border of the Palestinian enclave.

The situation in the Middle East sharply deteriorated following the infiltration of Hamas militants from Gaza into Israel on October 7, 2023, which was accompanied by the killing of residents in border towns and the abduction of more than 200 hostages, including children, women, and the elderly. Radicals referred to this attack as a response to Israeli authorities' actions against Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Israel announced a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip and began military operations there. In response to the rocket fire, separate strikes have also been carried out in border regions of Lebanon and Syria. Clashes are taking place in the West Bank as well.
