Will the EU or NATO Invest in Armenia's Armed Forces? Tóth's Response
I seriously doubt that the EU or NATO will invest in Armenia's armed forces. This was stated by Tom de Waal, a senior expert at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, in an interview with Azatutyun.
In response to the media's question about whether the EU or individual EU member countries are prepared to invest significant amounts of money and provide equipment for the strengthening of the Armenian Armed Forces, the expert said, "I think there is political interest. I think there is diplomatic interest. I think there is a little economic interest as well. As for security, I seriously doubt that the EU or NATO will invest in Armenia's armed forces. Armenia is still a member of the CSTO."
He added, "Perhaps France may do something on a bilateral level, but here we are talking about a long-term process. In the long-term perspective, I believe Armenia may have very good prospects. It is a democratic country and I think it will remain so. It continues to have a well-educated population."
“In the short term, however, if we look towards 2024, a lot may not be well in Syunik if Russia attempts to destabilize Pashinyan's government. Unfortunately, what the West may offer is more long-term and not so short-term. So, I think every month is crucial.”
