Azerbaijani Official Discusses Peace Negotiations Between Yerevan and Baku

Bakou hopes to hold another round of negotiations on the draft peace agreement between Azerbaijani and Armenian officials in the near future. This was stated by Elchin Amirbekov, the Azerbaijani presidential special representative, during a broadcast on Estonian public television.

“We hope that the next round of negotiations will take place soon, and discussions will resume on the draft peace agreement, which, by the way, was developed by Azerbaijan and presented to Armenia for the first time just a year ago,” said the special representative of the Azerbaijani president, emphasizing that despite the physical absence of negotiations on the text of the agreement, both sides continue to exchange drafts, each presenting their observations and modifications.

“We, and not only we, hope that after the complete restoration of Azerbaijan's territorial integrity, the chances of reaching a breakthrough point in the negotiations have greatly increased,” he noted.

The official stated that the opening of communications is an integral part of the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia. “The main direction of the negotiations is the agreement on the text of the peace treaty between Baku and Yerevan. In addition to the main point, it includes two others: the opening of communications, as well as the demarcation of the state border between Azerbaijan and Armenia,” Amirbekov said.

Speaking about the restoration of transport communication, he highlighted the “Zangezur Corridor,” noting, “so that Azerbaijani citizens can easily reach Nakhchivan by land.”

“This refers to a 42-kilometer railway, which, unfortunately, was destroyed as a result of the conflict. It's not just a matter of constructing the missing section; by the way, we have almost completed that work. I mean the Horadiz-Aghband segment, unfortunately, the Armenian side has not even started the technical justification work for this project,” Amirbekov said.
