Will Russia Help Armenia in Case of an Azerbaijani Attack? Kopirkin Responds

“I have no basis to say that Russia will call into question its allied commitments with Armenia, but as an ambassador, I cannot discuss such developments,” said Sergey Kopirkin, the Russian Ambassador to Armenia, during an interview with Public Television when asked whether Russia will assist Armenia in the event of an Azerbaijani attack.

“Russia has not and will not renounce its allied commitments to Armenia. I have no grounds to assert that Russia will not fulfill its obligations towards Armenia. I think it is incredibly important now, and it is in everyone’s interest, for the situation to develop peacefully and create the foundations for long-lasting peace,” he noted.

At the same time, he mentioned that Russia does not see a strong willingness from Armenia to work within the Russian negotiation framework. The diplomat emphasized that nevertheless, Moscow is not withdrawing from the region, and regional peace is extremely important for it.

Kopirkin also addressed the question of why some Russian officials blame Armenia rather than Azerbaijan for not fulfilling the trilateral agreement. He stated that not all statements by Russian officials express a logic of accusations against Armenia. There are also positive assessments that, unfortunately, are not sufficiently covered, just as the essence of Russia's position towards Armenia is not highlighted.

“Continuing on the theme of accusations, I should point out that it is also worth considering the serious criticisms and accusations directed at Russia by certain individuals within Armenia. There is an attempt to place the blame for tragedies and failures on Russia. Of course, Moscow does not absolve itself of responsibility for the processes occurring in the region,” added the ambassador.

According to him, Russia is a responsible actor and is doing everything possible to address the main issues and prevent escalation.
