Trump Claims Biden and Allies Waited Three Years to File 'Frivolous' Case

Former U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed the Supreme Court's decision not to expedite consideration of his presidential immunity in the context of alleged criminal acts. According to RIA Novosti, Trump stated, "Corrupt Joe Biden and his henchmen waited three years to bring this frivolous case, and now they tried (but failed) to conduct their witch hunt through the courts. Of course, I have the right to presidential immunity. I was president, and it was my right and duty to investigate and speak about the rigged and stolen 2020 presidential election," he wrote on his Truth Social platform.

He announced that he is now "looking forward impatiently" to the hearing on his appeal in district court.

It was previously reported that the U.S. Supreme Court had rejected the prosecution's request for an expedited hearing regarding the limits of Trump's legal immunity and its applicability to several criminal charges against him. Special prosecutor Jack Smith is believed to have sought to speed up the proceedings regarding Trump's alleged interference in the electoral process, approaching the Supreme Court bypassing intermediate courts to clarify whether the former president has immunity from legal prosecution for actions during his time in office.

Trump himself requested the court not to agree to expedite the process, which is ongoing in federal court in Washington and includes, among other instances, the Capitol riot by a crowd of supporters of the then-sitting president who sought to disrupt the legislative confirmation of his Democratic rival Joe Biden's electoral victory.

Trump's defense is based on the assertion that he, as the head of state, had legal immunity and also exercised his right to free speech by refusing to concede defeat in the elections. It is noted that Trump faces a total of 91 charges across four criminal cases, which the Republican politician calls the Democratic establishment's attempt to prevent his return to the White House. The most serious charges carry a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
