Soldiers Return to Their Barracks: Hajiyev on Armenian-Azerbaijani Relations
Azerbaijan is ready to sign a peace agreement with Armenia, said Hikmet Hajiyev, assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, in an interview with BBC World.
“For this reason, Azerbaijan has also proposed five fundamental principles and a draft of the peace agreement. There are currently diplomatic commitments between Armenia and Azerbaijan within the framework of direct negotiations. I believe that Armenia and Azerbaijan have managed to surprise the world with a positive agenda. On December 7, the two countries released a joint statement expressing their intention to advance the peace agenda and implement confidence-building measures,” Hajiyev stated.
According to him, the last three months can be considered the calmest period in the history of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations since the independence of the two countries. The assistant to the President of Azerbaijan noted: “There is neither war, nor violence, nor confrontation; soldiers are returning to their barracks. At the local level, relative peace is ensured. Now it is time to transform it into sustainable peace, including the signing of a peace agreement.”
