“Blessing does not mean approval of marriage”: details on the blessing of same-sex couples
The Vatican has allowed priests to bless same-sex couples, but has made it clear that no marriage ceremonies or rights will be performed for them. This reform, titled “Fiducia supplicans,” was published by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith and has been confirmed by Pope Francis, according to Vatican News.
The decree states that the Church’s teaching on marriage remains unchanged and that the ability to grant blessings does not mean that the Church approves of same-sex marriages. Moreover, such blessings should not resemble any wedding ceremony.
“When two people ask for a blessing, even if their marital status is 'irregular,' the ordained minister may grant the blessing. However, this pastoral gesture of blessing should not contain any elements resembling a wedding ceremony,” the statement emphasizes.
