KP Member of Parliament Aims to Legally Raise Marriage Age Threshold

Rustam Bakoyan, a member of the ‘My Step’ parliamentary faction, stated on his Facebook page: “Dear compatriots, I intend to initiate a legislative process aimed at raising the marriage age threshold. Considering that I represent the Yazidi community in the Parliament, I receive alerts particularly regarding early marriages among the Yazidis. It is worth noting that this issue is pervasive; there are many cases of early marriage among Armenians as well.

According to the current legislation of the Republic of Armenia, the marriage age is 18. A person can marry at the age of 17 if there is consent from their parents, guardians, or caretakers. A person can also marry at the age of 16 if there is consent from their parents, guardians, or caretakers, and the other marrying person is at least 18 years old.

Considering that the activities of the Human Rights Protection and Public Affairs Committee of the National Assembly also encompass the rights of children and national minorities, and emphasizing everyone's right to education and health preservation, I will hold a discussion on December 19 of this year at 11:00 AM in Hall 334 of the National Assembly, with the participation of relevant sectors, representatives of the Yazidi community, and sectoral NGOs.
