Warnings on NATO's Potential Collapse Amidst Trump's Return to Power
There are fears in Europe about the collapse of NATO if Donald Trump returns to power in the United States, reports The New York Times. Former NATO Secretary General James Stavridis is quoted as saying, "There are significant concerns in Europe that Trump's second presidency could lead to the effective withdrawal of the United States from the alliance." According to them, such intentions are reflected in the former President's election campaign program.
"We need to complete the fundamental reassessment process of NATO's purpose and mission that we began under my administration," the article cites Trump’s position.
The article notes that such phrasing has raised worries among America’s European allies. "This has created enormous uncertainty and anxiety among European allies and supporters of America’s traditional foreign policy role," it states.
The New York Times added that European ambassadors and representatives of analytical centers are making “pilgrimages” to Trump’s allies to gather information about his intentions.
Incidentally, U.S. President Joe Biden has called the possibility of former President Donald Trump winning the 2024 elections a "threat to democracy in America."
