Why Hungary's Frozen $10 Billion is Being Unblocked

The European Commission is set to unfreeze $10 billion for Hungary, which had been on hold until the country implemented necessary reforms. This was reported by The Guardian, citing anonymous sources.

The frozen funds are expected to be allocated on December 12 and will constitute about one third of Hungary's total suspended financing.

EU officials have indicated that this move is not related to Hungary’s Prime Minister's statements about blocking Ukraine's accession talks with the European Union.

At the end of November, Reuters reported that Hungary could receive part of the money post-unblocking, which had previously been frozen by the EU due to concerns over rule of law violations within the republic.

Meanwhile, Hungary's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó stated that the country has refused to support proposals to include measures in the EU's 12th sanctions package against Russia that would jeopardize the energy security of European nations. He emphasized that Hungary will not agree to sanctions against the nuclear sector, as this could threaten its own energy supply security.

Earlier, the foreign ministers of Russia and Hungary discussed the situation in Ukraine.
