The Authorities Have No Desire to Take Anything from Anyone: Kocharian on Alaverdi Developments
Currently, there is much speculation from the opposition that the specter of snap elections is looming over Armenia. However, there is no such specter. This was stated by Andranik Kocharian, Chairman of the National Assembly's Defense and Security Committee, in an interview with NEWS.am.
“The current authorities have proven that they have no fear, and if necessary for ensuring the stability of the country, they will hold snap elections; there is no issue with that. The main idea is that the bearer of power is the people,” he said in the interview.
Regarding the developments in the Alaverdi City Council, where the ruling political party expressed no confidence in the current mayor representing 'Living Country' and elected one of its own members as mayor, Kocharian responded that the authorities have neither the desire nor the goal to take anything from anyone. “These are constitutional processes, where if the council is not performing well, the other side is trying to take advantage of that opportunity. If there are opposition candidates in the winning municipalities, they should do their job well or present a stable personnel during the formation of the council so that such problems do not arise. There is no violation of the law in Alaverdi. The composition of the council is divided in a 13-14 ratio. It was 13-14 before, but now it is in favor of the candidate from the ruling authorities. If power is changing in Alaverdi, it means that they have not been able to form a stable authority,” said Kocharian.
