Changes to the Law on Citizenship of the Republic of Armenia

According to the press service of the National Assembly, Armen Ghazaryan, head of the Migration and Citizenship Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Armenia, presented the proposed changes to the Law on Citizenship in the first reading. He stated that the initiative aims to establish an empowering norm for the documentation process and the determination of the status of stateless individuals.

The rapporteur also proposed to extend the validity of the authority to recognize someone as a citizen of the Republic of Armenia under Article 10, Paragraph 2 of the law until 2026. This pertains to ethnic Armenians currently residing in Armenia, who are citizens of other former USSR republics and do not hold citizenship in any country.

The initiative clarifies the relations concerning the cessation of citizenship for children. "In cases where a child could become stateless, their citizenship of the Republic of Armenia will be granted automatically by law," noted Ghazaryan.

Changes are also proposed to provisions related to the prevention of illegal migration after the cessation of Armenian citizenship and the termination of citizenship for minors.
