Israel Prepares for "Prolonged War" Against Hamas: FT
Israel is preparing for a prolonged war against the Palestinian Hamas militant organization, which could last for at least another year. This was reported by the Financial Times (FT), citing sources.
According to the sources, the most intense phase of the offensive is expected to begin in early 2024. The goal of the Israeli command is to eliminate Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, military commander Mohammed Deif, and another senior member, Marwan Issa.
In addition to destroying the militants' military capabilities, Israel also intends to dismantle the tunnel network in Gaza and undermine Hamas's governing authority in the enclave.
"This will be a very long war. At this point, we have not even reached half of our objectives," a source familiar with Israel's plans told FT.
The publication notes that the duration of the operation will depend on the progress of military actions, international pressure, and Israel's ability to free hostages. Interviewees indicated that, unlike previous wars involving Israel, this conflict will not have a clear endpoint.
"(This is not the case) where the referee blows the whistle, and the game is over," the sources said.
One senior Israeli military official, who requested anonymity, told FT that 10 out of Hamas's 24 battalions have already sustained "significant losses," with more than 50 mid-level commanders and 5,000 militants reportedly killed. Another source added that the city of Gaza is "40% occupied." Military operations between Israel and Hamas resumed on December 1, following a seven-day ceasefire.
