VIDEO: Customs Duties and Other Taxes to Be Collected for Vehicles Registered in Georgia Starting January 1

Mariam Z.

Starting January 1, 2024, Armenian citizens will be required to pay fees to a deposit account managed by the customs authority for vehicles imported for temporary use from Georgia or non-EAEU member states. This decision was made during today's meeting of the Armenian government.

The issue arises from the fact that light passenger vehicles imported into Armenia are often registered under the guise of 'formal' temporary importation in non-EAEU member countries, mainly in Georgia. The reality is that the costs for registering vehicles in Georgia are lower than those in the EAEU countries. As a result, no payments are made to the state budget in the forms of customs duties, value-added tax, environmental tax, or property tax.

“Instead, revenues from these taxes for vehicles operated in Armenia but not registered there contribute to the state budgets of other countries,” the decision's justification states.

The amount collected will be refunded when the vehicle is exported from Armenia, meaning it will be returned to the country where it was registered. Currently, there are about 9,000 vehicles operating under this status in Armenia.
