Gas Imports from Iran Expected to Increase

Armenia plans to increase the volume of gas imported from Iran. This was stated by Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Gnel Sanosyan during the "Energy Week 2023" event.

"Currently, Armenia imports 365 million cubic meters of gas from Iran annually, and based on a known agreement, we return electricity to Iran at a 1:3 ratio. A few months ago, we signed an extension agreement with our partners to prolong this contract until 2030, which also allows for an increase in gas imports from Iran and corresponding electricity exports," noted the minister.

Sanosyan added that the current diameter of the pipeline importing gas from Iran permits a higher volume of gas to be brought in. "There is no need for a new pipeline yet, as the current pipeline is not being used to its full capacity," he added.

It is important to note that when Sanosyan mentions the "known agreement," he refers to the "Gas for Electricity" agreement, which was set to expire in 2026 but has been extended until 2030.
