Monument Dedicated to Russian Peacekeepers Unveiled in Nagorno-Karabakh

A monument dedicated to Russian peacekeepers who fell on September 20, 2023, was unveiled in the area of deployment of the Russian peacekeeping contingent in Nagorno-Karabakh. This ceremony marks the Russian Peacekeepers' Day.

On September 20, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that a vehicle transporting Russian peacekeepers was fired upon near the village of Jankhatağ. As a result, the military personnel in the vehicle lost their lives.

It was later revealed that among the five peacekeepers who perished was Lieutenant Colonel Ivan Kovgan, the deputy commander of the Russian peacekeeping forces in Nagorno-Karabakh, aged 52.

Fifty years have passed since the Soviet Union conducted its first peacekeeping mission in Egypt, observing the situation around the Suez Canal. This event took place on November 25, 1973, and is now commemorated as Russian Peacekeepers' Day.
