A powerful underwater earthquake has struck the Philippines, with a magnitude of up to 7.2. This is reported by news.sky.com.
The shaking, which lasted for several seconds, occurred about 16 miles (26 kilometers) south of Burias, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Scientists have indicated that a tsunami is not expected, but residents have been advised to prepare for aftershocks and potential damages.
Preliminary reports indicate that one person has died and 18 have been injured. Passengers at the city’s airport were evacuated from the runway.
Researchers assessed the earthquake’s intensity at between 6.7 and 7.2 magnitude, and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology stated that it occurred at a depth of six miles (10 km).
The Philippines is situated on the “Ring of Fire,” a zone known for its volcanoes and prone to earthquakes surrounding the Pacific Ocean.
