Ministry of Emergency Situations Provides Details on Explosion at Yerevan State University Fire
On November 17, at 09:37, a report was received about an explosion with fire outbreak in the basement of the Faculty of Chemistry at Yerevan State University, located at 1 Alek Manukyan Street. This was reported by the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
The room is designated for a pump station, which also serves as a staff locker room. An adjacent room is a storage area for chemicals, where no fire occurred. Chemists conducted reconnaissance at the site, and no hazardous gases were detected in the air.
With a fire complexity level of "Number 2," six firefighting units, as well as duty groups from the firefighting and rescue operations department of the city of Yerevan and the Rescue Forces, were dispatched to the scene. Additionally, a group from the Radiation, Chemical, and Biological Situation Monitoring Department and a medical support unit were also present.
One staff member was killed on the spot, and three individuals were transported to the hospital, including a member of the patrol service who was hospitalized for smoke inhalation; their condition is assessed as satisfactory. The fire was contained at 10:11 and extinguished by 10:23. Household items and wooden structures burned in the compressor room.
Employees of the Investigative Committee of the Republic of Armenia are conducting necessary actions on site to clarify the circumstances of the incident. It should be recalled that earlier it was reported that a fire had broken out in one of the basement rooms of the first building of Yerevan State University, followed by an explosion. The Ministry of Health has reported casualties and injuries as a result of the explosion.
