Armed Man Drives into Hamburg Airport
Last night, over 70 flights were canceled at Hamburg Airport due to an armed man driving into the area, according to a report from the RIA agency, referencing the airport's press service.
"For today, 286 flights are scheduled (139 departures and 147 arrivals), which are supposed to transport approximately 34,500 passengers. As of now, 61 flights (34 departures and 27 arrivals) have already been canceled. There will be more cancellations and delays throughout the day," the press service stated.
Additionally, six departures and four arrivals were canceled last night. Another 17 flights heading to Hamburg have been redirected to other airports. In total, around 3,200 passengers were affected by the situation that unfolded yesterday.
On the evening of November 4, Hamburg Airport was shut down due to "police operations." The police announced that they were conducting a significant operation on the runway, relating to terrorism and hostage-taking.
According to the Bild agency, the armed man is in his vehicle with his four-year-old daughter. The police have indicated that a possible motive might be a custody dispute related to the child.
Later, Bild reported that the man is a 35-year-old Turk from Lower Saxony who wishes to take his daughter to Turkey. After driving into the airport, he parked his vehicle near a Turkish Airlines aircraft from which passengers needed to be evacuated.
