Three Countries Break Diplomatic Relations with Israel; Ambassadors Withdrawn
Bolivia's authorities have announced the severing of diplomatic relations with Israel due to the actions carried out by the IDF in the Gaza Strip, Reuters reports. The information has been relayed by Meduza.
Deputy Foreign Minister Freddy Mamani stated at a press conference that Bolivia made this decision as a sign of not accepting and condemning "the ongoing Israeli aggression and disproportionate military attack in the Gaza Strip."
Two other South American countries, Chile and Colombia, have announced that they have recalled their ambassadors from Israel for consultations.
All three countries have called for a ceasefire, and the authorities in Bolivia and Chile have stressed the necessity of providing humanitarian assistance to the Gaza Strip, while also accusing Israel of violating international law.
The necessity for a ceasefire has also been declared by the governments of Mexico and Brazil.
Israel's foreign ministry has not yet commented on the recall of the ambassadors from Chile and Colombia, nor on Bolivia's announcement of severing diplomatic ties.
Reuters notes that Bolivia is one of the first countries in the world to announce the severance of diplomatic relations with Israel due to actions in the Gaza Strip. In 2009, Evo Morales, who was then serving as Bolivia's president, had also severed diplomatic relations with Israel due to the strikes on the Gaza Strip, but these were restored in 2020.
