Trump Could Be Removed from Presidential Race, Media Reports
The court is preparing to use a 150-year-old law to remove former U.S. President Donald Trump from the presidential race, Reuters reports. The information has been shared by news.ru.
The prosecution intends to utilize a provision from the U.S. Civil War era that prohibits individuals involved in insurrection from holding federal office. This pertains to the events surrounding the January 2021 Capitol riot, instigated by supporters of the former president.
Earlier, Donald Trump labeled the charges against him concerning the Capitol riots as political persecution, stating, "All the recent events are targeting a man who is significantly ahead of his competitors in the electoral race."
It is worth noting that after the presidential election on January 6, 2021, in which Joe Biden won, Trump's supporters refused to acknowledge the election results and began to storm the Capitol building, clashing with law enforcement.
As a result, five people have died, including a police officer. Over 160 criminal cases have been initiated, and charges have been filed against Trump. In the indictment, special prosecutor Jack Smith has laid out four counts: conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government, violation of the right to a fair election for voters, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy for the purpose of doing so.
In total, the former White House occupant faces over 50 years in prison.
