Explosion in Kazakhstan Mine Leaves at Least 21 Dead

An explosion has occurred at the Kostenko mine in the Karaganda region of Kazakhstan. Preliminary reports suggest that methane gas ignited, creating a fire within the mine. According to the latest information from the press service of ArcelorMittal Temirtau, the mining company, 21 miners' bodies have been recovered, while 23 individuals remain trapped inside the mine.

As per the data from the Akimat of the Karaganda region, there were 252 people inside the Kostenko mine at the time of the fire. Rescuers managed to evacuate 205 miners, and 18 workers were hospitalized due to carbon monoxide poisoning, with one in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Kazakhstan reported that at least 50 individuals and eight pieces of equipment have been involved in the search and rescue operations. The General Prosecutor's Office of Kazakhstan has initiated an investigation into violations of safety regulations occurring during mining or construction work.
