American Power: Irreplaceable or Ineffective? Joe Biden Surrounded by Missiles on The Economist Cover
“American Power: Irreplaceable or Ineffective?” is the headline chosen by The Economist for today’s feature article. The cover prominently displays Joe Biden surrounded by flying missiles.
The publication discusses how the American leader is responding to the war between Israel and Hamas and is determining the global role of the United States in this conflict. “Two massive aircraft carriers have been sent to assist Israel. Their mission is to prevent Hezbollah and Iran from opening a second front along the Lebanese border. The warships, weighing 200,000 tons, signify American power, even as other global powers speak of the decline of American authority. The United States is facing a ‘complex, hostile world.’”
The external threat consists of three parts. Firstly, the chaos spread by Iran in the Middle East and Russia in Ukraine. “Aggression and instability are draining American political, financial, and military resources. Conflicts surround America, making it an easy target for war provocateurs and accusations. All this undermines the idea of a world order,” the magazine notes.
The second threat, according to the author, is that certain countries, including India and Saudi Arabia, are increasingly defending their interests and are reluctant to comply with Washington’s directives, which complicates the notion of the United States being a ‘superpower.’
The third threat is the most serious, the publication points out. “China aspires to create alternatives to the values enshrined in global institutions. It seeks to reconsider concepts such as democracy, freedom, and human rights, preferring development over individual freedom and national sovereignty in relation to universal values,” the periodical highlights.
