Maps in Turkish and Azerbaijani Secondary Schools: One of Them Omits Armenia

As the topic of new Armenian history textbooks remains relevant, I would like to illustrate the maps used in secondary schools in Turkey and Azerbaijan. This was noted by Turkologist Varujan Geghamyan.

“The first image shows the main map from Turkey's 12th-grade 'Modern Turkish and World History' textbook (published in 2018 and approved by Turkey's Ministry of National Education) titled 'Map of the Turkic World' (Türk Dünyası haritası), which Turkish students use to conceptualize their neighboring world.

The second image depicts the same map, which the leader of the MHP party, a component of Turkey's ruling coalition, Devlet Bahçeli, presents to President Erdoğan, the head of the AKP party.

The third image is a 'Turana' map from the Azerbaijani history textbook. Turan is the general name for a pan-Turkist state, synonymous with 'Turkic World',” the Turkologist wrote, adding, “I have almost all Turkish textbooks at my disposal, and there are even more interesting episodes that I will try to publish soon.”

Auroranews contacted Varujan Geghamyan for clarification. He mentioned that Armenia is included in the map depicted in the first image but is absent in the second one.

When asked whether Artsakh is included in these maps, the Turkologist responded, “Of course not; it is absent from both.”
