Considering the Arrangement Between Ukraine and Moldova: Saakashvili Appeals to Yerevan and Baku
The former President of Georgia and former governor of Odessa, Mikheil Saakashvili, made a statement on his Facebook page addressing the leadership of Armenia and Azerbaijan, warning of the threat of a new military conflict in the South Caucasus regarding the "corridor" issue. He emphasized that there are alternative solutions.
Claiming that "Russia is interested in escalating this conflict," because "such a war would not only harm Azerbaijan’s international reputation but could also lead to a change of government in Armenia," Saakashvili urged the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia to look at the existing arrangement between Ukraine and Moldova as a possible example.
"These two countries maintain friendly relations, mutually recognizing each other’s borders. In a scenario where Ukraine requested access to the southern part of the Odessa region from the city of Odessa, Moldova willingly agreed to lease a road through the Transnistria region. As the former governor of Odessa, I have often used that leased road (which I repaired) under the control of Ukrainian border guards when I wanted to travel to Ukrainian Bessarabia. Moldova receives commercial benefits from this agreement," the former president noted on his Facebook.
He also added: "Applying a similar solution to the situation between Azerbaijan and Armenia would be beneficial for both countries. Armenia could gain commercial and financial advantages, as well as benefit from significant transit routes. Additionally, Azerbaijan could avoid the ongoing necessity of Russian troop presence, which would ultimately lead to peaceful coexistence between the two countries."
