Husband Assaults Wife with Scissors and Attempts to Set Her on Fire

On October 22, 2023, at 6:00 PM, a 24-year-old woman reported to the Erebuni division of the Armenian National Police that between 6:30 and 8:00 AM that day, her husband had physically assaulted her using his hands, feet, and scissors, and attempted to set her on fire with a special liquid, causing her bodily injuries.

The Investigative Committee reported that a criminal case has been initiated in the Erebuni and Nubarashen administrative districts under the Criminal Code of Armenia, Article 196, Part 2, Clause 4. The young woman has been recognized as the victim and has been interrogated regarding the circumstances of the incident.

According to the gathered evidence, on the night of October 22, 2023, a domestic dispute arose between the couple in a cabin located next to a reservoir on David Bek Street. During the argument, the husband, a 31-year-old resident of Yerevan, struck his wife's body multiple times with his hands and feet while threatening her with murder and attacking her face, chest, arms, and legs with scissors. He then poured a flammable liquid over her and ignited it with a lighter. However, the woman managed to extinguish the flames by covering herself with a blanket and immediately escaped from the cabin.

During the preliminary investigation, an examination of the crime scene was conducted with the victim present, during which a burnt blanket and the container of the flammable liquid were found near the cabin. The windows and ceiling of the cabin were found to be soiled. Forensic medical and forensic examinations have been appointed. The police have been instructed to carry out operational investigative measures.

The prosecutorial body has filed a motion with the supervising prosecutor to initiate public criminal prosecution against the woman's husband under Article 44-155, Part 2, Clauses 6 and 9 of the Criminal Code of Armenia, which has been approved. A decision has been made to arrest him for the purpose of presenting him to the court.

As a result of the carried-out measures, the husband was located, arrested, and presented to the prosecutorial body. He has been charged by the investigator for committing the aforementioned criminal acts, and a motion has been submitted to the court for his detention as a preventive measure, which has been approved. The preliminary investigation is ongoing.
