Turkey Expected to Ratify Sweden's NATO Membership Application in Coming Weeks

The Swedish government anticipates that Turkey will ratify its NATO membership application within a few weeks. This was reported by the Swedish newspaper 'Expressen,' citing its sources, according to RIA Novosti.

“We expect that the ratification of Sweden's application by Turkey will begin soon, and it will be ready in a few weeks,” the newspaper quoted an unnamed government source.

Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated that Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler assured NATO allies in Brussels that Ankara would not renege on its commitment to ratify Sweden's membership.

It is worth recalling that Finland and Sweden submitted their applications to join NATO in May 2022 against the backdrop of events in Ukraine. Finland became the alliance's 31st member on April 4.

As of now, Sweden's application has yet to receive final approval from Hungary and Turkey. As an EU member, Sweden agreed with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to facilitate the activation of Turkey's EU membership process in exchange for the ratification of its application.
