US Imposes Sanctions Against HAMAS: Axios
The US Department of the Treasury is preparing sanctions against the Palestinian Islamic movement HAMAS in connection with the attacks on Israel, according to the American Axios portal, citing its own sources. The sanctions are expected to be imposed as early as this week.
According to Axios’s sources, the sanctions list may include “several leaders of HAMAS.” Non-governmental organizations that finance the Palestinian Islamic movement may also be targeted by these sanctions. The US Treasury hopes to completely halt HAMAS's illegal financial activities with the help of foreign governments, as Axios reports.
“Although the leaders of HAMAS have no assets in the US, the sanctions will increase pressure on certain countries where they are located, such as Qatar,” one source told the publication.
It is anticipated that only the “first phase” of sanctions against HAMAS will be approved and come into effect this week, while “additional measures” will be taken later.
The war between Israel and HAMAS, which began on the morning of October 7 with attacks by Palestinian militants on Israeli territory, has now been ongoing for ten days. Current reports indicate that 1,400 people have died in Israel, while the number of casualties in the Gaza Strip has exceeded 3,000.
