Water Supply Crisis Intensifies in Gaza: UN
The water crisis in Gaza has worsened following the closure of the last operational desalination plant, according to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). This situation is resulting in human losses.
“Water scarcity and waterborne diseases are on the rise as water and sanitation systems are collapsing. This is linked to the recent closure of the last operational desalination plant in Gaza,” the UNRWA statement said.
On Monday, a water supply line operated for only three hours in the southern Gaza Strip, providing water to just half of the residents in Khan Younis, as Palestinians fleeing from Gaza have reached 1.1 million people.
The agency's statement also mentioned that the Gaza Strip requires 600,000 liters of fuel daily to operate water supply and desalination plants. According to UNRWA officials, fuel supplies in all hospitals in Gaza are nearly depleted, with only 24 hours left. The failure of backup generators will endanger the lives of thousands of patients.
