Possible Expansion of Conflict in the Region After Attacks on Israel, Josep Borrell

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, does not rule out the expansion of conflict in the region due to clashes between Israel and the Palestinian radical movement Hamas.

"This is what we are trying to prevent: reactions that could escalate the conflict. But no one can know for sure. It is very good that the Israeli army is warning that military operations will take place, and that people should evacuate," said the diplomat in an interview with Spanish newspaper El Pais.

According to the head of EU diplomacy, Israel's response to the attacks "contains elements that do not clearly conform to international law." He added, "Hamas makes it impossible to find peaceful solutions." Borrell stated that he does not know what will happen regarding humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

"This is the fourth war in Gaza that I have witnessed in my adult life, and it shows that the international community has forgotten about the Palestinian issue," the diplomat said.
