Armenian President Signs Law Ratifying Rome Statute

The President of Armenia, Vahagn Khachaturyan, has signed the law ratifying the Rome Statute. This information was reported in a document published on the official website of the President of Armenia.

"Vahagn Khachaturyan has signed the law on ratifying the Statute of the International Criminal Court, signed on July 17, 1998, and on the basis of part 3 of Article 12 of the Statute, a declaration recognizing the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court retroactively by the Republic of Armenia," the statement noted.

It is worth mentioning that on October 3, the National Assembly ratified the Rome Statute with 60 votes in favor, 22 against, and 0 abstentions. Armenia signed the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court on October 1, 1999, but had not ratified it. The process was interrupted on August 13, 2004, when the document was declared inconsistent with the Constitution of Armenia.

The Constitutional Court of Armenia decided on March 24, 2023, that Armenia's accession to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court is in accordance with the current Constitution.

Maria Zakharova stated that Armenia's actions are unfriendly regarding the Rome Statute. Additionally, the Russian Foreign Ministry has declared that Armenia's decision to ratify the Rome Statute will have the most negative consequences for bilateral relations.
