Russia and Iran Relations Can Be Considered Strategic: Lavrov
The relations between Russia and Iran can be considered strategic, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in a welcoming address to participants of the Tehran business forum, Expo-Russia Iran, published on the Russian Foreign Ministry's website.
“The Russian-Iranian relations, based on the good traditions of friendship and fraternity, can today rightly be considered strategic. Regular and reliable dialogue is maintained at the highest level, and cooperation between governments, parliaments, agencies, and businesses is intensively developing,” Lavrov noted.
It is also worth mentioning that, in an article by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov published on the Russian Foreign Ministry's website, it is stated: “Most of the world does not want to live under someone’s dictate. It wants to exist on equal terms within the framework of an objectively forming multipolar architecture.”
Lavrov emphasized that an increasing number of countries are striving to strengthen their sovereignty and defend their national interests, traditions, culture, and way of life. They wish to be friends and engage in mutually beneficial trade, both with each other and with the rest of the world. This sentiment prevailed during the recent meetings of BRICS, the G20, and the East Asia Summit.
The article notes that “the global majority, representing 85 percent of the world's population, advocates for a more just distribution of global goods and respect for civilizational diversity, in favor of the consistent democratization of international life.”
According to Lavrov, efforts to reform the UN, aimed at establishing the supremacy of international law, should involve the potential of new types of associations that reflect the interests of the Global South. “It is necessary to ensure that the spirit of multipolarity enshrined in the UN Charter is brought to life. <…> The foundation exists for building a new world, and it is strong—that is the UN Charter. Now, the main thing is to prevent its destruction through conjunctural selective manipulations with the charter’s principles and to achieve their full implementation with the interlinked involvement of all countries,” Lavrov declared.
The minister believes that only with the preservation of the norms of international law enshrined in the fundamental document of the UN can humanity overcome the destructive legacy of the unipolar era. He recalled that the responsibility for the existing crisis in international relations lies with the Western minority, which conducts an aggressive, narrow self-serving line.
“Risks of global conflict are increasing. At the same time, there is a way out of the created situation. For starters, everyone should be aware of their responsibility for the fate of the world in the historical context, not through the lens of conjunctural electoral arrangements for the upcoming national elections. <…> How ready everyone is to acknowledge their individual and collective responsibility for the fate of the world will be demonstrated by the preparation for the ‘Future Summit’ to be held next year under the initiative of the UN Secretary-General,” noted the Russian Foreign Minister.
