EU Council Special Representative Coming to Armenia

The special representative of the European Council is already on the way to Armenia, of course with the consent of the Armenian authorities. This was announced by the Secretary General of the European Council, Maria Pejčinović Burić, during her speech at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

According to Pejčinović Burić, the special representative will map the needs of internally displaced persons from Nagorno-Karabakh. “When we return, we will develop a program to provide immediate assistance to these people. But there is also the question of when and how these people should return home, as I believe no one wants to be a refugee, no one wants to leave the place where you were born or where your ancestors were born,” stated the Secretary General of the European Council.

She emphasized that attention must be paid to this matter within the framework of the European Council and that everything possible should be done to allow the people of Artsakh to return to their homeland. “As for Azerbaijan, I do hope that in the near future we will be able to send a mission from the Secretariat that will talk to the Azerbaijani authorities and see how they assess the situation in Azerbaijan. But at the same time, I urge Azerbaijan to truly fully comply with the European Convention on Human Rights,” she noted, expressing hope that due to the efforts made in these fronts, the residents of Nagorno-Karabakh will be able to return to their homeland.
