One in Four Members of Yerevan's Newly Elected Council is Unemployed: 'HETQ'

For the first time, Yerevan's newly elected council will choose a mayor. This was reported by 'HETQ'. On October 10, the newly elected council of Yerevan will elect a mayor during its first session. Such a situation has never occurred in the city governance of Yerevan.

In this election cycle, none of the political forces participating in the electoral race obtained more than 50% of the 65 mandates. Previously, the first candidate on the proportional list of the political force receiving more than half of the mandates automatically became mayor. However, this year, for the first time, the mayor of Yerevan will be elected by the newly formed council through a public vote.

The council session is valid if at least 33 members are present. According to the results of the municipal elections held on September 17, five political forces surpassed the electoral threshold: the 'Civil Contract' party received 24 mandates, 'National Progress' received 14, the 'Mother Armenia' alliance gained 12, the 'Republic' party secured 8, and the 'Public Voice' party obtained 7 mandates.

The media notes that according to data presented by the Central Electoral Commission, approximately 26% of the members of the newly elected Yerevan council are unemployed. Among the 65 council members, 17 have not stated any employment, workplace, or position in their declarations. This means that one in four members is unemployed.

Women constitute 37% of the newly formed council, with 41 men and 24 women set to serve. The average age of the council members is 43.
