‘That EU has betrayed Armenia’: Zakharova responds to Charles Michel's statement

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has accused the EU of betraying Armenia, stating, ‘That EU has betrayed Armenia.’

She reminded Charles Michel that it was the EU that convened summits in Prague and Brussels, where Armenian leadership recognized Nagorno-Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan, despite having previously argued the opposite.

Recently, European Council President Charles Michel stated, ‘It is clear to everyone that Russia has betrayed the Armenian people.’

Zakharova also noted that the EU will not ensure peace and de-escalation in Armenia. “Their main concern is not Armenia's security or the normalization of relations between Baku and Yerevan, but intelligence monitoring and exacerbating the situation based on Brussels’ interests,” she said.

She asserted that Brussels bears the responsibility for the current situation, stating, “The agreements reached among Yerevan, Baku, and Moscow were literally replaced by EU summits, and Yerevan's position was thus shaped under the influence of the EU.”

She reminded that it is the sovereign right of the Armenian authorities to express their views but stressed the need for open discussion. “We will see what the results of the upcoming Armenian-Azerbaijani summit in Granada on October 5, under EU initiative, will be,” she added.
