Senator Gary Peters Introduces Bill to Block US Security Assistance to Azerbaijan
US Senator Gary Peters has introduced a bill that prohibits the United States from providing security assistance to Azerbaijan until it has been clarified that it will not undertake offensive actions against Armenians.
Peters presented the bill in response to ongoing attacks by Baku against ethnic Armenians in Artsakh. At the end of September, the US senator visited Armenia, including a visit to the Armenia-Azerbaijan border and the Lachin corridor.
“The government of Azerbaijan has made it clear that it can and will use its military resources to carry out violent attacks against the people of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh. The United States cannot be complicit in the Azerbaijani atrocities against the Armenian people. We must pass this legislation to block any further American assistance to Azerbaijan until it ceases its aggression in the region,” the senator stated.
Peters also joined a group of legislators calling on the US Treasury Department and the State Department to impose sanctions on certain officials of the Azerbaijani government in connection with military assaults against Artsakh and the brutal blockade.
