Europe's Largest Gas Field Has Been Closed
Gas extraction at the Groningen gas field, one of the primary sources of this resource in Western Europe, has been halted.
Gas supplies were stopped in the northern province of the Netherlands at 6:00 AM local time (7:00 AM Yerevan time). Operations may resume in 2024. The reason for the suspension is the threat of earthquakes and destruction associated with the exploitation of Europe's largest gas field.
Gas extraction at Groningen began 60 years ago, quickly becoming a key source of gas for much of Western Europe and a significant contributor to the Dutch budget.
