What to Expect from the Pashinyan-Aliyev Meeting

On October 5, a meeting is scheduled between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Granada. This became clear on September 24, when it was announced that the Secretary of Armenia's Security Council, Armen Grigoryan, would be traveling to Brussels. According to an official statement, on September 26, he met with the Azerbaijani President's assistant, H. Hajiyev, to prepare for this meeting.

The newspaper “Zhoghavorod” reports that the meeting allowed participants to exchange views concerning a possible meeting of leaders within the framework of the third summit of the European Political Community, which is also scheduled for October 5, 2023, in Granada. During this time, it was noted that both Armenia and Azerbaijan are interested in using the possible meeting in Granada to continue efforts towards normalizing relations.

It is expected that discussions on October 5 will cover issues related to border delimitation, security, communications, humanitarian matters, and a peace agreement. Furthermore, it is emphasized that clear actions and decisive compromise solutions are necessary across all directions of the normalization process. In other words, significant decisions could be made during the upcoming meeting of the leaders on October 5.
