VIDEO: 86 Citizens Undergo Treatment at the National Burn Center, Says Hovhannisyan
At the National Center for Burns and Dermatology, 86 citizens are receiving treatment for burns sustained during an explosion at a gasoline depot in Artsakh. This was stated by Hovhannes Hovhannisyan, the director of the National Center for Burns and Dermatology, during a conversation with journalists.
"All of them have been identified, and we know their names and surnames. Unfortunately, the majority are in critical condition, with over 20 patients in extremely serious condition. The intensive care unit is maximally overloaded," Hovhannisyan noted.
Addressing the professional resources, he emphasized that they currently do not have issues with medical staff, and there are also volunteers helping with mid-level medical staff, nursing, or sanitary tasks. Additionally, doctors from abroad are working at the center, doing everything possible alongside Armenian colleagues for the swift recovery of the patients.
"At this moment, we have limited the flow of patients because we cannot handle it physically. We have patients in moderately serious condition who we are already able to transfer to dermatologists. This creates an opportunity for the burn specialists to accept other patients. We are also waiting for a change in the condition of our patients in the next 5-7 days; during that time, their status may deteriorate sharply, and we are prepared for that," Hovhannisyan said.
He emphasized that many patients have burns on their faces, while some have burns on their extremities, with nearly all patients having hand injuries. The doctor highlighted that there are cases where the surface area of the burns is smaller, but the damage is deep, and in such cases, surgical interventions are necessary.
It is worth noting that on September 25, a powerful explosion occurred at a gasoline depot near Stepanakert, resulting in numerous casualties. The confirmed death toll is 68, with the identities of 21 individuals known, while the others remain unidentified. The number of injured citizens is 290, of whom 168 have been transferred to medical facilities in Armenia.
