A New World Order is Emerging Before Our Eyes - Lavrov
The world stands at a crossroads, and it is crucial to prevent the start of a major war, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Today, he delivered a speech during the general political discussion of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, noting that "a new world order is emerging before our eyes."
"The development of history depends on us. It is in our common interest to ensure that a great war does not take place and that the mechanisms of international cooperation created by previous generations do not collapse entirely," Lavrov stated.
He reminded that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has proposed holding a 'Future Summit' next year. "The success of this initiative can be ensured solely through the fair and honest balancing of the interests of all member states, respecting the intergovernmental nature of our organization," Lavrov said.
The minister also touched upon the topic of possible expansion of the UN Security Council. "The expansion of the Security Council is becoming increasingly necessary by eliminating the underrepresentation of countries from the global majority—Asia, Africa, and Latin America," the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry noted.
According to him, "It is important that the new members of the Security Council—both permanent and non-permanent—enjoy authority in their regions, as well as in global organizations such as the Non-Aligned Movement, the 'Group of 77,' and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation."
