The Situation is Dire: The US Deeply Concerned About Reports of Violence Against Artsakh Citizens
The situation is dire, and the United States is deeply concerned about reports of violence against the civilian population of Artsakh. This was stated by Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US Permanent Representative to the UN, during an emergency session of the UN Security Council regarding the Artsakh issue.
“Azerbaijan has a responsibility to ensure its armed forces' actions fully comply with norms of international law, including humanitarian law, which pertains to the conduct of hostilities, the protection of civilians, and humane treatment of those involved in armed conflict,” she stated.
The US calls on the parties to ensure that humanitarian organizations can deliver food, medicine, and other essential supplies without any roadblocks. The US representative added that the safety of humanitarian workers must be guaranteed.
She noted that just one day after the permission for the movement of humanitarian cargoes was granted, Azerbaijan began military operations. “The residents of Artsakh are looking to us during this difficult moment: the US has provided over $24 million in humanitarian and development assistance since 2020 in response to the crisis,” she said, emphasizing that a resolution of the crisis is possible through ending the violence and achieving lasting peace.
