Investigation Launched in Paris Over Sale of Stained Glass Windows from Notre-Dame Cathedral

In Paris, an investigation has been initiated regarding the sale of stained glass windows from the Notre-Dame Cathedral. The Association for the Protection of Cultural Heritage has approached the central police department of Paris to assess the legality of the sale of two stained glass pieces from the cathedral at a Sotheby’s auction. This has been reported by the newspaper Le Figaro.

Philippe Machikoti, founder of an antiques organization, stated that two stained glass windows, stolen and replaced in 1862, were sold at auction in 2015. He claims that both stained glass pieces are part of the national inalienable wealth.

The expert suggests that the state was unaware of the theft of the stained glass windows in the 19th century and their sale eight years ago. They were sold for $123,000 and $111,000 respectively.

The auction house, Sotheby’s, assures that prior to offering the stained glass for sale, extensive research was conducted and all necessary permits were obtained from competent authorities, including export permits. A representative from the auction house also noted that the association had not contacted Sotheby’s before filing a complaint with the police.

The publication highlights that a similar incident related to the sale of stained glass windows occurred in 2021.
