VIDEO: Vazgen Tevanyan Defeats Azerbaijani Wrestler

Vazgen Tevanyan, representing Armenia, secured a victory against an Azerbaijani opponent at the World Wrestling Championship in freestyle wrestling taking place in Belgrade, Serbia (an Olympic qualifying event) in the 65 kg weight category, advancing to the semifinals.

The reigning European champion delivered an impressive win in the quarterfinals against Azerbaijan’s Haji Aliyev with a score of 12-2.

Tevanyan began his competition in the 1/16 finals, claiming a confident 9-0 victory over Belarusian Nurgun Skriabin, who competed under a neutral flag. In the 1/8 finals, he faced Tajikistan's Abdulmajid Kudiyev and emerged victorious in a tense match, winning 8-6.

In the evening session, dual world bronze medalist and three-time European champion Arsen Harutyunyan will compete for a bronze medal. The last Armenian representative, Sergey Sargsyan, lost in the 1/16 finals after securing one victory.

It is noteworthy that this championship is the first Olympic qualifying tournament for wrestlers, with 5 slots available for each Olympic weight category. Four medalists and one of the two wrestlers defeated in the bronze medal match will compete in an additional match for qualification.

The World Wrestling Championship will conclude on September 19.
