VIDEO: Ronaldo Arrives in Tehran as Iranian Fans Storm Hotel
Iranian football fans have stormed a hotel in Tehran, hoping to catch a glimpse of Cristiano Ronaldo, the forward for Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr. According to RIA Novosti, Ronaldo has traveled to Tehran to participate in the AFC Champions League match against the local club Persepolis.
The match is scheduled for today. Several dozen fans gathered outside the hotel where Ronaldo was staying, subsequently flooding the lobby and chanting the Portuguese star's name. Earlier, fans had escorted the bus transporting Al Nassr players from the airport, adorning the route to the hotel with banners.
As reported by the France Presse agency, the players of Al Nassr are being monitored in Tehran by an elite unit comprised of security forces specialized in presidential travel. Their role is to prevent any contact between fans and players of the Saudi team.
Iranian fans will not be able to attend the actual match, which will take place at the country’s biggest stadium, Azadi Stadium, with a capacity of up to 90,000 people. This is due to sanctions imposed by the Asian Football Confederation following a controversial post made on Persepolis's Instagram page in 2021.
